THE LONG DARK TEA-TIME OF THE SOUL
Author: Douglas Adams
Price: £2.50
Postage: £2.60
Condition: Very Good
Pages: 247
Format: Paperback

Adams was ‘my’ author for many years. My original exposure to Adams was actually not through a book but a vinyl version of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (both volumes on vinyl). Quite stunning storytelling but equally stunning pieces of sonic production. The Radiophonic Workshop at its very best. Then he went and died on me and I’ve never forgiven him for that because of the wasted creativity, the removal of brilliant stories and books from this planet. Wholly selfish reasons, therefore. I adored his humour and his originality. When he sadly left us, I gradually transferred to Terry Pratchett. Adams was and always will be my first love in terms of intelligent, SF/Fantasy humour.

3 BITS OF FRY & LAURIE
Authors: Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie
Price: £4.00
Postage: £2.99
Condition: Good
Pages: 564
Format: Hardback

I bought this one second hand, in this condition because I stupidly got rid of my original. In an odd way, I actually prefer to read the scripts included here for each sketch, than watching them on TV. For example there are two long-running joke themes: the secret agent, MI5 sequence called Spies and another based on the high-flying, high-pressure, whiskey-swilling, business practices called Dammit and the pair’s executive nemesis, Marjorie. As much as I love both men as comedians and creative artists, I also much prefer to read these sketches than see them performed (although they are funny to see, of course).

This and the following two collections were bought with the best of intentions but I never actually got around to reading them. So I bought them many years ago, they sat on a shelf. And I’m selling them. And I feel terrible. Guilt roams my soul when I look at them but time is too short and I have to be strong! Books. They do terrible things to my emotions.
