PSI WANTS TO TRAP YOUR BASS

The story is that Harmony HiFi Distribution is now the official UK distributor for PSI Audio’s AVAA C214 Active Bass Trap…but what exactly is the C214?

Developed for professional recording studios, this Swiss-made cylinder from PSI is designed to help treat your HiFi listening room. Well, the bass bits. 

The half-metre tall AVAA C214 (Active Velocity Acoustic Absorber, if you have the time), offered in black or white, is designed to tighten the bass that you hear in your room, apparently increasing accuracy.

It’s supposed to do this without you having to change the room itself. So you plug the C214 into the mains. You position it. Switch it on. That’s it. No external microphones (it arrives with one built in). No software. No calibration.

Behind a grille are two 133mm drivers, that microphone I mentioned, a DSP and amplification. Using this PSI unit is a bit like operating a subwoofer in reverse. So the microphone senses low-frequency air pressure and the drivers – powered by amplifiers – then equalise that pressure.

Take the theories behind noise cancelling headphones and use those to equalise low frequency pressure in your room and that’s about it. Price? £2,995 each.
