Hi Paul, thanks for all of your interesting videos. I have the Yamaha HS7, and unless the model has been updated in recent years, they need an external means of volume attenuation. Something like a passive studio monitor controller is required after the phono stage I believe.

Thanks for this, Jim.
Hi Jim – can you check out the rear side of the speaker as shown via this link? Is that gain control not enough or is that an addition to the model you remember? Any help would be welcome. https://www.andertons.co.uk/recording/studio-monitors/active-monitors/yamaha-hs7-active-studio-monitor-single-unit
Hi Paul.
On second look, you can turn the HS7 volume down to zero, so it might work. I have just connected one up to a chord mojo, but with the same output volume I have set for reasonably sensitive IEMs; I can’t say how they would cope with the power output of the phono-stage. Using these gain/volume controls does mean that your viewer will have to adjust volume of each speaker separately, at least until they were to pick up a monitor-controller. I’d suggest that they look at that first as it might do away with the need to get bespoke cables.
On a personal note, I found the HS7 to be impressively clear when I was first getting into the hobby, but realised fairly quickly that they are quite sterile and really only sound good when you are very close to them. They work well in a desk setup as they were designed to, but are certainly not room fillers.
Much appreciated, Jim – thanks for the info.
