GENESIS BBC BROADCASTS: VINYL & CD
12th January 2023
Curated by founder member Tony Banks and long-time engineer and producer Nick Davis this new suite of releases is available as a 53-track 5CD set and 24-track, triple LP
Released on 3 March 2023, this is the first time all of these tracks (and you can find a full list below) have been released on vinyl and the first time a majority of the iconic 1987 Wembley show have been made available in an audio only format. All formats are available for pre-order now at Genesis.lnk.to/BBCbroadcasts.
In terms of dates? The collections range between 1970 and 1998 and include contributions from all three of the group’s vocalists, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and, lest we forget, Ray Wilson. You’ll also find notes by author Michael Hann via the included 40-page booklet.
Stretching from the very beginnings of the band’s career via appearances on Night Ride and John Peel, the set encompasses both of the group’s Knebworth performances (1978 and 1992) as well as the 1980 show at London’s Lyceum and shows at Wembley in 1987.
The boxes are rounded out by material from the NEC in 1998 plus Paris Theatre and Nightride sessions from the early 70s, as well as the encore version of Watcher Of The Skies at Wembley Empire Pool in 1975.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention Paul. It’s a pity they couldn’t do a full six LP box set, with all 53 tracks on, but I guess you can’t have everything. Luckily, at least in terms of the Wembley concert, I’ve got the whole live broadcast on reel-to-reel, barring a few seconds when changing reels!
No problem and agreed Marcus – who knows, Universal might do a special edition in the future (my guess only). And that reel-to-reel format option sounds rather lovely!
Compromises have been made and it is far from perfect in that regard but my main criticism would be that truly awful cover art. Just a field. Of people. Surrounded by other empty fields. Zero shelf or shop appeal. This is one band who, since Peter Gabriel left and Hipgnosis stopped doing their album art, had no definable art direction or strong visual presence at all, presumably because none of the band really “got it” in the way, say, Pink Floyd did and their custodians still do.
Does anyone have experience with the quality/sound/mastering of other BBC Broadcast vinyl releases. I’d love to add this to my collection, but not if the quality is terrible. I have most if not all of the Genesis and Phil Collins LPs. I’m a big fan.
Hi Joseph. I have a couple of BBC albums on both vinyl and CD in my collection, and the quality is excellent, though it will obviously depend on who is pressing the vinyl for them. From Paul’s reply to my comment above, it sounds like it’s Universal, and pretty much all albums nowadays are on high quality 180 gramme vinyl anyway. As for the original recording engineering, I’ve always found BBC standards to be nothing short of superb, and I can personally guarantee you that the Wembley concert broadcast was indeed superb, as I recorded it on reel-to-reel at the time, as I was saying to Paul.
Thank you for the feedback.
