Hi Paul,
Great thorough review. I just purchased a pair of JBL L52’s to replace monstrous Studio 590’s for my smaller home office/living room hifi. I’ve been using a vintage Kenwood KA-8300 that I’ve decided to sell, looking for an amplifier to power the 85db/4ohm JBL’s. The aforementioned Cambridge Audio AXA35 doesn’t show a rating for 4ohm so unsure if the 35 watts would suffice. I’ve spent the weekend researching smaller two channels amplifiers, looking into the Marantz PM6007 also. Is there anything else that should be on my radar?
Hi Spence – I too would have had concerns because of the JBL’s low sensitivity and 4 Ohm rating but, then again, the company does say that any amplifier of 10W or over, should be fine. 10W is an awfully low recommended rating but hey, that’s what the man says 🙂 The 6007 is a fine amp too, of course. Try and grab a home demo. Tell the dealer that the purchase depends on it, etc. Any decent dealer who wants to retain you as a future customer should work something out with you.
Thanks for the feedback Paul. I scored an open box AXA35 for $306 shipped, worth the effort to spend some time with it. I also confirmed with Cambridge “You can connect 1 pair of 4ohm speakers to this unit.
The unit is rated at 8ohms, which is why you will find the wattage rating for that load listed. “
Thanks for the feedback confirmation Spencer and glad you were able to grab you amp. Hope you have a lovely time with your favourite music.
