Hello Paul, I have just realised I didn’t tick the box accepting follow up comments for a question I asked?
I am looking to buy a CD player and would like to know what to look out for when researching the various options. For example are there any specific electronic parts that you get with more expensive models? It is a little easier when buying a turntable as you can upgrade components like tone arm and cartridge, physical things, whereas with a CD player I do not know what you are getting for say the difference between a £1K and £20K player. Can you help steer me in the right direction? Many thanks. Clive≥
Hi Clive, to cut a very long story short…it depends on two things, your budget and space. Firstly, more expensive models tend to use better quality parts and also take more care in design terms (e.g. isolating components to lower the noise floor). Integrated CD players can be excellent but separating the integrated components into a CD transport and a separate DAC connected via a coax cable ups the sound quality even more but does take up more room.
Thanks Paul. I guess that I have to trust “you get what you pay for.” My budget is around ¬£4K for transport and DAC and have plenty of room.
Clive
Hi Clive, look at this transport: https://theaudiophileman.com/9000cdt-transport-from-audiolab/ then look at coax cables from Tellerium Q, get the best you can afford. Then look at this Graham Slee DAC for ¬£1,600 (https://theaudiophileman.com/majestic-dac-review-graham-slee/) or the cheaper Topping DAC for around a ¬£1k (https://theaudiophileman.com/d90le-dac-from-topping/), I hear – but have not reviewed – good things about PS Audio’s Stellar GainCell so can’t comment too much on that plus, if you suddenly can expand your budget, the Moon 280D Mind 2 for around ¬£3,800.
Thanks for your quick and detailed reply, much appreciated.
Clive.
