MC A Mono cartridge from Ortofon

14th June 2019

The MC A Mono betrays design elements from the MC A 95 cartridge and has been created using Ortofon’s SLM technique where fine particles of Titanium are welded together, layer-by-layer, to construct a single piece body

In its press release for this high-end mono cartridge, Ortofon says all the right things to mono fans. So there’s, “If you play a mono record with a stereo cartridge you will not achieve the same signal in the two output channels, due to imperfections such as crosstalk, noise, phase errors, tracking error, antiskating and distortion. This difference between the channels will result in an unstable and compromised image. Mono switches on some electrical components can compensate for this, to some extent. However, using a dedicated mono cartridge will eliminate all of the reproduction problems, as the cartridge produces only one signal and feeds both channels of the hi-fi system equally. This will provide a much more forceful and stable image with a fuller sound.”

And also this, “True Mono cartridges also do not respond to vertical movement (as all the musical information is picked-up only in the horizontal plane of a record groove).”

The MC A Mono utilises the Ortofon Replicant 100 diamond stylus profile plus Ortofon’s patented Wide Range Damping (WRD) technology and high-end components such as the strong, compact neodymium magnet in the generator system, the Aucurum wire coils and armature. This 6g cartridge also includes a Boron cantilever.

Offering an output impedance of 7 Ohms and a low-to-medium output voltage of 0.2mV, the MC A Mono is priced at £3,750 and is a special order item only.
